DOURO

The Douro Valley, between Barqueiros and the border, is the result of the prodigies of nature, but also of the effort and energy expended by man in his transformation.
The vineyard that breeds the grape varieties of the famous Port Wine is the cause and the main reason for all this hard work. Centuries of toil, fatigue, and human sweat, they swept the earth, removed the massive shale, molded the walls and terraced steps to bring the vines together, erecting this colossal work, which Marquis of Pombal would reward in the eighteenth century with the title of first Demarcated region of the world.

In December 2001, UNESCO elevated the Alto Douro Vinhateiro to a World Heritage Site. A title, unanimously awarded, which awarded the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, decreed by the Marquis of Pombal, in 1756. Region unique for gathering the virtues of the schist soil and its privileged sun exposure with the unique characteristics of its microclimate in together with the hard work of the Douro man.

Its landscape shows three main aspects: the unique character of the territory, the natural relation of the wine culture with the olive tree and the almond tree and the diversity of the local architecture. In addition to these aspects, the application highlighted the remarkable work carried out by the man in the construction of schist walls that prolong the slopes and, above all, the authenticity and integrity of the cultural landscape.
